The Neurology department for patients with acute cerebrovascular accident is closely related to the whole neurology care of ICDC.

Inpatient care in ICDC has been provided since 2004. Initially, the patients were admitted only on selective basis. The first patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents have been admitted since May, 2006. The neurology department was first to provide critical medical care in ICDC. The great groundwork done under the guidance of D.Khasanova preceded this. The guidelines that constitute the stroke treatment basis in ICDC were unique for the Russian Federation and were in stark contrast to the management system for the patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents (ACVA) that existed that time. The majority of the staff completed training in the leading neurologic clinics of the Russian Federation.

Marat Saykhunov has been the eternal head of the neurology department since 2006.

Until 2012 ICDC have had only one neurology department. It carried out treatment of patients admitted selectively and patients with ACVA admitted urgently. More than 3000 patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents were treated in 2006 – 2012. Significant results were achieved in the area of treatment and management of the patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents. This resulted in reduction of mortality from stroke (over 6 years it reduced from 13.65 to 11.8%), 300 thrombolytic therapies were performed. Endovascular intervention techniques of ischemic stroke treatment were implemented jointly with endovascular specialists. In 2008 ICDC was awarded with the certificates of appreciation in contests held by the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan Governments.

The neurology department created the favourable conditions for holding all the rehabilitation activities.

In autumn, 2012, the neurology department of ICDC underwent important changes. The neurology department for the patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents was opened.

This department has 30 beds and a stroke unit with 6 beds. There medical care is provided in accordance with the Russian and international standards. The experienced neurologists that have special training in critical care, intensive care and rehabilitation, as well as the nursing staff that have professional skills in healthcare delivery to the patients with ACVA and serious patients nursing work in the department. The stroke unit has all the necessary intensive care equipment (vital signs monitoring system, medical ventilator), as well as the equipment for rehabilitation and complication prevention (verticalizing devices, pneumocompression equipment, endoscopic unit for swallowing difficulties detection).

After stabilizing the patients are transferred to the neurology department for dependent intensive care delivery for the patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents. The department has double and triple rooms with comfortable conditions for the patients. All the wards and other rooms are equipped in accordance with the accessibility requirements for the disabled people: hand-rails, no sills. The department has rooms for physical therapy.

In spring, 2013, the neurology department for the patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents won the first prize in the all-Russian competition that was held within the 5th World Congress for Neurorehabilitation, in the category The best conditions for rehabilitative measures.

The staff of the department does research work: 2 doctoral and candidate theses are in process. The main area of research is angioneurology.

The department of neurology and neurosurgery of Kazan medical university is based on ICDC neurological service. The staff of the department together with the faculty of the Medical University gives the classes to the people that undergo (advanced) training courses.
